NICE to see you!’ hollers frontman Peej Edwards. “To see you nice!” the crowd roars back. It’s a Bruce Forsyth throwback, not the banter you’ve come to expect at a punk-pop gig, and certainly not at KK Downing’s hard rock haven.
But then, nothing is as you might expect. The setlist; the audience; the atmosphere; the game show… Ah, yes, the game show, a Play Your Cards Right pastiche – renamed Use Your Cards Correctly for copyright coyness – right in the middle of the gig.
It’s a bonkers Brucie bonus.

So, not an ordinary gig, and there’s good reason for that – because Welsh wonders Punk Rock Factory are, quite simply, extraordinary. Who else can attract a crowd ranging from grizzled old rockers to primary school kids perched on parental shoulders?
Here, there are classic rock connoisseurs, motley metalheads, post-punk pretenders; there, middle of the road mums, a side of sparkly Swifties, a gaggle of Goths – and they’re all having the time of their lives, singing their hearts out together to Disney classics.
Over an hour and a half, the Cwmbran band serve up songs from Moana, The Jungle Book, Aladdin and more, alongside classic kids TV themes – SpongeBob Squarepants, anyone? – show tunes, Michael Jackson, Abba and B*Witched covers.
All delivered with enough punk-pop power to surely solve the energy crisis. It’s fast, furious and feelgood, not unlike the Saturday morning kids’ TV staples the band was brought up on. There’s good-natured banter, too, playing Wolverhampton off against Birmingham.
Highlights are inevitably Let It Go from Frozen, a crunching rework of The Greatest Show, Cars classic Life Is A Highway, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Halloween nod Thriller and, yes, Abba’s Mamma Mia. Oh, by the way, We Don’t Talk About Bruno.
It’s surreal, a rock and roll fever dream, and the most fun fans will have had at a gig since, well, the last Punk Rock Factory tour.

But, and here’s the thing, underlying the fun and games is some serious musicianship. They’re tighter than a drum, a band delivering knockout punk-pop punch after punch. You’ll leave a gig with not only with a silly smile spread across your face, but also a sweat-soaked T-shirt.
Dutch support band Call It Off played a punky set of Taylor Swift songs that’ll leave even the cynics among us searching out the originals because the likes of Shake It Off, Love Story and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together surely never sounded so good.
An extraordinary night all round.
