
REGULAR readers of the blog will know that I’m a fan of Wrexham chainsaw artist Simon O’Rourke, whose work I’ve featured from time to time.
It seems right on Armistice Day to highlight the remarkable sculpture ‘Hope’ which he completed back in 2021, and which can be visited in a public park.

The poignant carving stands in Vulcan Park, Workington, Cumbria, and is, says Simon, a memorial “for the men and women who willingly put themselves in danger for the sake of others”.

It was commissioned by the town’s council to remember those who gave their lives in World War One, World War Two and all other conflicts since, and was unveiled on Armistice Day 2021.

It’s not his only war memorial work. His best-known example is the Airman at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, and there’s a WW1 soldier in Chorley’s Astley Park.
